Douglas Coupland misses librarians

From Stray Questions for Douglas Coupland, in the New York Times Papercuts blog:

“Without hesitation the Web is a blessing, but you know what I miss? Reference librarians. I used to live in the reference library but it’s now been over a year since I’ve visited one. They must be doing a lot of sudoku puzzles at their desks these days.”

Check out the comments from librarians, and a response from ol’ Doug himself, looks like.

Some of those reference librarians were quite snarky! I didn’t see his comment as being rude to librarians, I think he was just stating how he has noticed a difference in how he used libraries and wonders if others have changed the way they used the library as well.

I agree, I don’t think he was being rude, particularly. Libraries have a funny way of saving people’s behinds when they really need them - I’m sure he doesn’t mean he’ll never visit one again.
